In today’s day and age internships are crucial to obtaining a job after graduation. I searched far and wide and used all my resources in order to find an internship for this upcoming summer. I began my search through old Grady College listservs over Christmas break, collaborating the internship listings and descriptions that I was interested in. I began to reach out to these contacts in early January and by February I was busy setting up multiple interviews. I spent lots of hours in the car driving to and from Atlanta, getting my suit dry-cleaned and practicing mock interviews in order to prepare me for the real deal. There are so many wonderful internships out there in the PR world, that I had so many choices. Many are unpaid, and the lucky few can offer some sort of payment for intern work. Irregardless, all of these internships are extremely competitive.
Since I studied abroad last summer, I was unable to secure an internship for when I returned due to the time constraint issue, so this year I knew I needed to step up my game. I can’t even imagine searching for a job next year and doing the whole search all over again. It is quite stressful, and if you were a part of this search this year you know what I’m talking about.
After all my interviews, I am proud to say that I secured an awesome internship for this summer. I will begin work on May 16th at the Atlanta Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, doing public relations for the city of Atlanta specifically regarding the hospitality industry. I cannot wait to start and gain invaluable experience that will hopefully help me obtain a job next year. It should be interesting to see how I like the 9-5 workday and dealing with traffic. I have a feeling I might have a greater appreciation for college life after these 13 weeks. I am looking forward to bloging about my new work and the wonderful things that Atlanta has to offer. If you are still in the search for an internship or a job, I wish you good luck because I know how stressful it can be! If you have also secured a position then CONGRATS!! It is so exciting to have wonderful opportunities ahead of us!
