Harry Hayes, a specialist in Government at the University of Georgia told a group of journalism students Monday that the current economic crisis in the state has led cities and counties to consider other government options such as consolidation.
Georgia has seven consolidated governments, which is more than any other state in the nation except Texas. Hayes said that more counties and cities in Georgia are trying to consolidate their governments due to the economic crisis the nation is currently in.
Although consolidated government is increasing in popularity, it is not easy to accomplish. Hayes said that local elections to create consolidated governments pass only about 25 percent of the time. The newest consolidated government in Georgia that passed in 2008 was Echols County.
